NASA recently released imagery showing the deforestation of America  …in just 34 years.

We are killing the Earth

Forever reblog.

Oh wow

THIS HURTS

How long are we going to keep closing our eyes to this? What are we going to do?

NEVER SCROLL PAST THIS

Its just going to become this blue and brown planet, children in the future will draw their planet with brown and not green like we used to

This needs to fucking change

WALL-E IS BECOMING REAL LIFE

I wish we could do something about this but what can we do? No one would listen.

That’s a fucking shit attitude.

Ok.  The second image is very obviously photoshopped.  Not by the OP, most likely.  I’m not saying that.  But it is.  How can I tell?  Look at the size of North America in both.  Notice how big it has become?  Now, if you take the proportionate size of South America, and the proportionate size of Antarctica and Canada (not shown in image, which is why it’s listed separately)…And continue to accept that the amount of ocean in the second image is that actual amount of ocean on the earth, then there is no fucking room for Asia, Europe, Australia, or Africa on their own much less together.  North America is not that big.  Someone has tampered with this image.
The effects of deforestation are still visible from space, though not that visible.  A lot of places in the USA are actually protected by law against logging, and you can actually see them from space.  You should potentially be able to see Yellowstone from space as well as most of Colorado.  The majority of world deforestation is actually concentrated in various countries in South America and Asia, though the USA is still in the top 10.  But if this is a representation of how much deforestation has taken place in the United States, then by comparison, Brazil, the country that cuts down almost ten times the number of forested areas the US does in a given year, should be a barren wasteland.  The Amazon rainforest should no longer exist.  And it does.  I was there last summer.  It’s still there.  But it is in serious danger.
Deforestation is still a huge problem, not only because it contributes to global warming (a very small percentage, though), but also because it displaces millions of animals and humans who rely on forests for food and shelter.  In fact, in many places, deforestation is becoming a human rights issue, not a land use issue.
Recycling is huge in preventing deforestation, as are adopted regulations preventing the cutting of trees.  The issue is getting people to adopt regulations.  But we can help.  No, most of us can’t call up politicians and pull strings like that, but we can turn to using different resources.  Bring your own washable cups to coffee shops.  Most places offer a discount if you do this.  Buy recycled material napkins and plates.  Use glass when possible.  Look for recycled paper books.  They exist.  Or use an electronic reader if you’re not a stickler for the old ways.  Subscribe to online newspapers and magazines rather than printed, unless the magazine or paper uses recycled paper.  RECYCLE EVERYTHING YOU CAN.  If trees aren’t enough for you, and if animals aren’t enough, think of the people.  There are people who may become refugees due to deforestation.  Their lives will be overturned.  They will lose their homes and their way of life.  Donate to organizations that actually do groundwork fighting deforestation and land right battles.  You are awesome.  Go be awesome.
TL;DR - Image is photoshopped but deforestation is still bad.  Recycle.  Save the trees, save the animals, save the people.

It is truly a strange thing when a steam pipe bursts under an abandoned building in the dead of winter, but that’s exactly what happened under the Clinic Building at Greystone Park State Hospital in 2007, a month before the building was unceremoniously knocked down.  The steam congregated near the ceiling of the abandoned asylum infirmary, condensing on the pipes and dripping down in regular patterns - and creating these ice stalagmites.  An hour after taking this photograph, demolition workers came into the building and chased us through the tunnels; we had to hide in an attic in 0 degree weather for hours while cops searched for us.  The next time I drove out there, there was no trace that a building had ever stood in this spot.
